Professions

Ultima Online has no classes — but players still talk in professions: “I’m a tamer,” “she’s a smith,” “he runs a treasure hunter.” A profession is a cluster of skills, a playstyle, and a way of making a living. This section is the by-profession view of the wiki: each page is a hub that pulls together everything for one career — the skills it uses, the build template to get there, the how-to guides for its day-to-day, and the items and tools of the trade.

It’s the answer to “I want to be a ___ — where do I start and what do I need?”

Fighting other players is its own discipline, with its own builds — the tank mage, the nox mage, the stun mage, the dexxer, the stealth archer. See PvP Builds for the classic player-killer and duelist templates and how they differ from PvM characters (and Notoriety & PvP for the rules of engagement).

Most players are a blend — a tamer-mage, a warrior-smith, a stealth archer, a sampire. The 700-point skill cap (seven Grandmaster skills, see 7x GM Templates) is what forces the interesting choices.
